Concept: Refusal: I say right, not duty

 

«In this short talk, I will take a closer look at the concept of refusal. I do this by recalling Maurice Blanchot’s political writings as well as his worldly action of the late 1950s, especially his contributions to the journal Le 14 Juillet and the Manifesto of the 121 against the war in Algeria.

Following Blanchot in his 1958 text Le Refus (Refusal), I will argue that refusal is more than simple protest. It does not embrace good sense or political realism, nor does it claim to be valid under all possible circumstances and for everyone. Refusal can never be universal, it is an elementary reaction and a last resort, and, while it is often triggered by an inacceptable use of language, it is in itself silent and solitary.

I will stress the fact that Blanchot conceived refusal as an individual right and not as a duty. This means that the intimacy writers and artists may share with the experience of refusal does not entitle them to impose a moral obligation on others to join their company. What can be done though – and this may well be a “task of the writer” – is to keep the memory alive of moments in which individual refusal created a “Friendship of the No”. Instants that do not last and yet exist.»
